What are Digital Assets and Why You Should Create them

What are Digital Assets?

A Digital Asset is any form of content or media with the right to use it – as defined by  Widen.com.

The right to use it, is key here, as only the holder of the rights to use can monetize the digital asset.

Examples of Digital Assets

  • Images you create or take
  • Blog posts
  • Web pages
  • Videos
  • Audios
  • An email list of contacts
  • Domain names
  • Presentations
  • Digital documents including eBooks

Why you Should Create Digital Assets?

  • It takes very less money to create them but may take time to create them
  • You can create digital assets on your own without any help to start with
  • You can monetize your digital assets
  • Your digital assets can provide passive income for life
  • You can create a digital product in your spare time
  • They bring out the creative side in you

What are Digital Assets Worth?

It depends. If a lot of people like a digital asset then it could be worth a lot. If no one likes it then it could be worthless. There are also some digital assets that do not have a monitory value but have a sentimental value.  For example your personal pictures are digital assets that may be worth less to others but holds a lot of emotional value to you.

Protect your Digital Assets

It’s important to safe guard your digital assets. Backing up your digital assets in the cloud is a good option. Use cloud storage like DropBox or Google Drive for this. Security is also important for your digital files. Having a good anti-virus software on your computer and having strong passwords for all accounts are also paramount to protecting your digital assets.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ? H. Jackson Brown Jr.

The important thing to note is digital assets are easy to create and doesn’t have to take months. You can start with one quickly within a matter of hours and learn. Experiment and let your inner passion take over. If you don’t have a lot of money to invest why not create a few digital assets and see where it takes you? You can pick and chose the type of digital asset that you are comfortable with. If you like photography then take as many pictures as you can and find a platform to market it. A platform like Flickr or similar. Do you know how much a good image costs? It can cost anywhere between $5 to $50. Guess how many times the photographer had to take the photo before someone bought it? Only once. That sounds like passive income, you bet! If you are passionate about short videos then there is a billion dollar market for that too, it’s called YouTube. The only constant in life is, no action = no change. Don’t create one digital asset, then pray & hope! Create as many as you can.

The internet is the biggest library in the world. Do something, take action. If you don’t, then you will be in Doctor Who’s position surrounded by knowledge but nowhere to hide.

We should all be able to create digital assets with the use of a computer and the internet. Hell, we should be able to create some digital products using our smart phones these days. You never know what’s in your mind and how much it’s worth. My digital asset is this website and everything on it. It took me less than 2 hours to put the basic website together, without any content of course. This is the time it takes to watch a movie. This time included niche selection and domain name selection. No, I have no previous experience in building a website of my own. Do you want to try?
