How to Build a Website from Scratch

Here is a 5 step process on how to build a website from scratch. You can complete this in under 5 minutes and you don’t need any technical skills! (Choosing a domain name and website theme may take some time.)

Step 1: Choose Free vs Paid

You can either create a free website or a paid website. The difference in domain names (URL’s) will look like:

  • yoursite.wordpress.com (free)
  • yoursite.com (paid)

How the email address looks for your website is also something to consider at this point.

Which one is more professional?

  • tom@yoursite.com or
  • yoursite@gmail.com

If you want the professional look then you would have to buy a domain name. You would also need a hosting provider to host your website.

Please note a free site (yoursite.wordpress.com) will always have some limitations like very few website themes, inability to have Google adsense ads, less brand value and definitely less catchy. There may be costs to host the free website.

Step 2: Choose Platform – WordPress

WordPress is used 66% of all content management systems and is the best for beginners. Do I need to say anymore?

Step 3: Choose Where to Build Your Site

You can build a free site with wordpress.com or through someone like Wealthy Affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate offers two free websites, hosting and unlimited websites with the Premium membership. The Premium membership also includes hosting and email addresses. (Please note wordpress.com does not provide free hosting)

Step 4: Choose a Domain Name

In this step you will have to choose a website name. Go to NameCheap.com and check available domain names if you are buying one. I recommend NameCheap as they don’t have multiple confusing offers to get more money out of you. This is also called an up-sell! Select a domain name that is relevant to your niche. If you can’t find something you want, keep going. There are premium domain names with keywords and these can be very expensive and is not necessary for beginners. Standard domain names cost around $10 a year.

Step 5: Choose a Theme

The last step is to choose a theme for your website. Don’t get too fixated here as you can change the website theme at any time you want.

You can watch a video of this whole process here.

Wala your WordPress site is now ready. Congratulations!
